N&W Norfolk and Western Employee Magazine 1959 January New Passenger Diesels
Front cover is separated from the magazine
Norfolk and Western Magazine is published every month in Roanoke, Va. TRAIN No. 3 (THE POCAHONTAS) is pictured at Roanoke on the front cover of this issue with two of our 16 new passenger diesel locomotive units, all of which were received in November and December 1958. The new diesels arc painted with the Norfolk and Western's standard color, Tuscan red, and the name of the railroad, monograms and numbers are cut from gold reflective sheets. In addition to enhancing the appearance of the engines, the new markings have a safety feature because they reflect Iight from any angle and at night make the locomotive easily seen, particularly at grade crossings. With the six passenger units which the N. & W. already had, the number of passenger diesel locomotives now owned by the railway totals 22. The new locomotives are geared (or a maximum speed of 77 miles per hour and the six units already in service arc being changed to correspond in all specifications to the new equipment. All N. & W. passenger trains now are being handled with diesel power. Our Class J steam locomotives are being maintained for standby service only.
