N&W Norfolk and Western Employee Magazine 1940 May Coal  ALL pages are RIPPLED.  Pages are not stuck together.
Norfolk and Western Magazine is published every month in Roanoke, Va. COAL, DUG FROM THE HILLS of West Virginia and Kentucky and Virginia,
provides fuel for industries in foreign ands, power which turns the wheels of commerce and manufacturing in this country, heat for our homes, and a multitude of by-products which contribute to the health, happiness and pleasure of mankind everywhere. Between mine and consumer stretch bright ribbons of steel over which trains shuttle back and forth, making this great wealth, lying in the hills, available to all.
One important step in the journey of coal from source to ultimate consumer is shown on the front cover of the MAGAZINE this month. The picture shows a typical modern coal tipple along the Norfolk and Western where "Fuel Satisfaction" is graded and sorted, loaded into hopper cars and gondolas, and started on the trek to distant points. The mine lies over the mountain to the left. Conveyor belts, linking the two together, fetch "black diamonds" from the recesses of the earth to the tipple. The man in the foreground is tagging an N. & W. hopper car which has just been loaded. In the distance, you'll see a Norfolk and Western train waiting to pick up the cars and to start them rolling toward their destination ion. This scene is duplicated each day at hundreds of points along the railroad.
The first article in a series devoted to coal -its mining, processing, transportation and uses-will be found in this issue of the MAGAZINE.
