Willis A. McCaleb was the company photographer for the Nickel Plate Road during the transition from steam locomotives to diesels in the 1950's. His job assignments gave him many opportunities to record the railroad scene over much of the system. This first volume begins in Buffalo with the famous excursion powered by Hudson 175. We follow the Nickel Plate westward, pausing at Erie, Conneaut, Ashtabula, Cleveland, Lorain and many of the small towns along the line. Our final stop is the major division terminal at Bellevue. Willis not only provides great pictures of the engines and trains, but introduces us to the people and facilities that made it happen. This is a railroad man's story told in color, by railroad men and their machines.
