Climb aboard the remnants of the "Newfie Bullet" and ride the train over the majestic Gaff Topsails. Learn about the building and operation of our Newfoundland Railway, which ran for one hundred years. Listen to the stories of men who worked with pride and dogged determination to keep trains running in the harshest conditions. Hear ghost stories, tales of schooling and life in isolation, yarns of hard times and humorous incidents. See photographs of locomotives, cars and equipment, copies of timetables and much more.
This book will satisfy the historian, the nature lover, the many people who travelled by train and want to refresh their memories, as well as those who did not have the opportunity to climb aboard.
Have a pleasant journey!
This series of books tells the story of the Newfoundland Railway, from the start of construction in 1881 until its closure in 1988. All private railways are covered as well. NEXT STOP: GAFF TOPSAIL (in its fourth printing) and NEXT STOP: WRECKHOUSE (in its second) are still available. NEXT STOP: ST. JOHN'S (the fourth and last in the series) is underway and will be published in 1999. The series includes in-depth taped interviews with more than 50 retired railroaders as well as over 600 photographs. To "ride" on all our 1000 miles of track, get the complete set.
