Thirty-five years have passed since the New York & North Shore Traction Co. disappeared from our midst; time, as always, has slowly obliterated not only the physical traces of the road but even the memory of this picturesque old line. This book appears as a conscious effort to rescue from near oblivion the story of the fine old days of trolley railroading on the north shore of Queens and Nassau counties, and to preserve for all time the interesting events, the anecdotes and memories that have hitherto been widely scattered and precariously preserved in the papers and memories of old-time trolleymen and residents.
Every effort has been made to uncover every source of information that would shed light on the North Shore operations. Five different newspapers have been systematically searched for articles on the line, and all public records in the archives of the Public Service Commission, the Town of North Hempstead, and the Board of Supervisors of Nassau County have been utilized. The wealth of illustrations appearing herein is the result of the kindness of many people; my thanks is due to Messrs. Felix E. Reifschneider, George Arnoux, C. A. Kinsey, Stephen Maguire, Robert Presbrey, Ernest P. Simon, and Miss Cowl. For the sole surviving transfer pictured here I am indebted to Mr. Richard L. Wonson, who generously donated the original to me.
