Epilogue

Second only to Main Street, Depot Street was perhaps the most commonly named avenue in America, and although the small-town depot became a venerated piece of Americana, the great stations and terminals the railroads built became architectural masterpieces. Few were greater than those erected at the turn of the 20th century, and in its first 50 years, by the New York Central Railroad and its predecessors. Often
the company spared no expense in their design and construction, and the resulting structures became a reflection of civic and corporate pride, incorporating art, style, and function.
Through engaging text and over 250 exterior and interior black-and-white and color photos, author Geoffrey H. Doughty examines the origins of the great stations and terminals which ultimately became a part of the New York Central, including those from Chicago to New York, Cleveland to Cincinnati and St. Louis, from Boston to Albany, and scheduled intermediate stops. Also examined are events at the railroad in the summer of 1956, when the company stunned the industry with the announcement that it would sell 406 stations across its vast 10,000-mile system.
Don't miss this opportunity to take a closer look at the gems which the company casually labeled as "stations." New York Central's stations were as great as the trains of its Great Steel Fleet, and never before have they been placed between the covers of a book in such a fascinating array.
