The New Susquehanna Great Spots for Shots by George Povall Soft Cover 1986 30 Pages A railfan's guide to the picture taking possibilities along the new main line.  Little Ferry - New Sparta Jct - Susquehanna Loop - Warwick and beyond
This will be a running review of potential photo locations along the portion of line that constitutes new operations for the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway. The portion from Campbell Hall to Warwick, formerly the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway and presently a part of the Conrail system, will be used by Susquehanna trains under a trackage rights agreement with Conrail. The L & HR trackage from Warwick to Sparta Junction is now owned by the Susquehanna and a new connection has been built at New Sparta Jct. to allow trains to move directly onto the original and newly rebuilt Susquehanna line from this point east into the New Jersey and New York City Metropolitan area. The review therefore moves from one area to the next in the direction that an eastbound train will take.
There are 23 areas covered and identified as A through W. Specific photo locations within each area are numbered.
Before beginning there are a few points that should be noted. I have included highway mileage to help serve as a guide to the overall directions. This mileage refers only to that which will accumulate between the last point mentioned and the next point. Although every effort has been made to see to their accuracy, I can not guarantee this. Please use them as a reference only, as they were intended.
Our main route of travel will be refered to as the MAIN TRIP to avoid confusion that might result by using the word route. Any locations that are off the MAIN TRIP will be refered to as SIDETRIP which, after visiting, you would return to the MAIN TRIP by going back to the diversion point.
Terms such as route will only be used as part of the name or number of a highway or road. When mentioning landmarks or signs, capitals will be used and what the sign says will also be in quotes. I would suggest a pre - trip reading of the information provided to familiarize yourself with the areas involved and to make up a plan in advance of the spots you would most like to include.
If you are coming into the area from a distance I would suggest staying overnight in the Middletown, N.Y. area. I have provided a list of motels in this area and also a list of other tourist attractions that are on or not far off our MAIN TRIP, (see inside of back cover).
I have included Area A for those who may wish to photograph any activity on Conrail while traveling the short distance between Middletown and our official starting point at Campbell Hall, Area B. E/B and W/B - refer to the direction the train will be traveling. All trains going toward Little Ferry are E/B and the reverse for W/B.
All photos used in this book that have trains pictured of the Lehigh and Hudson River, Erie Lackawanna and New Haven were taken between 1965 and 1968. They are included to show examples of the spots mentioned.
