The Collis P. Huntington chapter of the National Railway Historical Society - now known as the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society Inc. - started a tradition in May 1966 that has now lasted a half-century!
On Sunday, May 15, 1966, the 6'Y2-year-old chapter sponsored its first NEW RIVER TRAIN excursion on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway's main line between Huntington and Hinton, W.Va.
Members had gone on several railroad trips as a group and the chapter had helped sponsor two fan trips on the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad in remote Clay County, West Virginia (Sunday, May 29, 1960, and Saturday, June 1, 1963), but the NEW RIVER TRAIN was the first trip the chapter sponsored alone.
The special consisted of two C&O E8a locomotives, seven heavyweight 700- and 800-series C&O coaches, a C&O six-door express car for snacks and souvenirs, and two Norfolk & Western Railway low-side gondolas equipped with safety handrails and wooden benches.
The train welcomed passengers at Huntington and Charleston, was featured in a photo run-by at Hawks Nest, and it completed the 294-mile round trip in ten hours and four minutes.
