Introduction
The New Haven Railroad's Old Colony Division extended southeastern Massachusetts from the city of Boston to ih of Cape Cod. Prior to 1893, the Old Colony Division Actually the domain of the independent Old Colony Railroad and its subsidiary companies. Old Colony Division was perhaps best known for its extensive branch line commuter operations which served the suburban bedroom communities of Boston's South Shore and the summer passenger trains which took vacationers to the beach resorts of Cape Cod. Despite being somewhat sparsely industrialized at the present time, the Old Colony Division also a significant amount of freight activity during the New Haven Railroad era. In fact, the Old Colony Division operated substantial freight yards at South Braintree, Brockton, Taunton, Fall River, and New Bedford to serve the shoe factories, textile mills, shipyards, and other industries.
