INTRODUCTION
The "Midland Division" is the label the New Haven Railroad applied to what had been the eastern end of the New England Railroad. The most recent in a series of names, the NERR is perhaps best known by that of its predecessor, the New York & New England. The former was absorbed into the NH system by means of a 99-year lease effective July 1, 1898.
Like the New Haven, the New England came to be in a piecemeal fashion via the consolidation of several small railroads throughout the latter half of the 19th Century. Unfortunately for the NERR, all of its antecedents had been troubled pursuits with long track records of financial difficulty and failure. Hence, the company's history is complex and not well-suited to the necessarily brief summary attempted in the following text.
