The New York, New Haven & Hartford was a product of the economic boom that railroads experienced in the nineteenth century. By the turn of the century its lines sprawled like a spider's web throughout southern New England, and almost all the rail lines in the industrial states of Connecticut and Rhode Island were under its control.
The heart of the system was the Shore Line route between New York City and Boston. Here passenger trains with names like Merchants Limited, Yankee Clipper, Owl, and Senator raced between the cultural and economic capitals of the eastern United States. Every day, thousands of commuters rode the New Haven. Mixed among these passenger trains were dozens of freights, bringing needed products into southern New England and hauling finished manufactured goods to the rest of the country and the world. Pulling these trains, an assortment of steam, diesel, and heavy electric locomotives provided a never-ending variety of sights, sounds, and smells.
In The New Haven Railroad Along the Shore Line, Model Railroader magazine associate editor Marty McGuirk takes you back through the eyes of some of the greatest railroad photographers to a time when the New Haven linked its home territory to the world with bands of steel.
