592 pages followed by 16 color painting reproductions.
Despite the fact that the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad has been fascinating to rail fans since well before the turn of the century, this book is the first major work ever done on New Haven equipment. Its 608 pages make up for this previously unfilled gap in railroad history, and represent a decade of steady work, plus research stretching back many more years. Its 1,364 photographs and 16 full page, color oil paintings comprise the finest assemblage of New Haven views ever. These are backed up by an authoritative text and fifty "class charts" detailing every locomotive type, plus rosters of steam, electric, and diesel power, and a comprehensive index.
The New Haven's incredible variety is covered in full, from the earliest tottering teapots of its predecessors to the latest diesel electrics. In between, the parade of steam locomotives, electrics, M.U.'s, diesel-hydraulics, gaselectrics, railbuses, freight cars, cabooses, tugboats, transfer and Long Island Sound steamboats, highway buses and trucks, steam cars, lightweight trains, and RDC's is truly mind boggling. Add an equal variety of passenger cars, including everything from the awesome grandeur of a polished heavyweight Parlor, to D.C. electric interurbans, and you begin to see why this multi-faceted system strains even the space available in a book as large as this.
Nor are the New Haven's darker days ignored. Early in this century its wrecks were so spectacular and frequent that they were immortalized in LIFE WITH FATHER. But with some extremely capable Presidents, the railroad was considered one of the nation's best, both financially and for its high class passenger service.
