But the New Haven railroad was beset by financial and management problems that would lead to reduced service reliability and poor performance records before a decade had passed. Ironically, bankruptcy and a re-evaluation of the road's physical plant would result in the first and only heavy overhaul the units would ever receive. Still, by the time the New Haven was absorbed by the even more financially decrepit Penn Central in 1969, 40 percent of the fleet was in dead storage.
