The 200-foot tower and station, minus the trainshed, stands like a sentinel over Worcester in this 1940 view. At the insistence of one of the 1911 station's architects, Samuel Heickel, Jr., it was retained as an example of outstanding architecture. It would be a part of Worcester's skyline until it was razed in 1958 to make way for Interstate 290... in the name of progress, of course. Notice the Railway Express trucks and the Mobilgas station on the corner with the old pumps on the island.
Westbound #15 pauses at the Worcester Union Station September 28, 1939. J-2b Hudson #606 does the honors today. The tracks curving away to the left are the Boston & Maine's to Hillsboro, Ayer and beyond. The previous depot's 200-foot tower can be seen over the depot.
