ON THE BACK COVER
The Nene Valley Railway is probably best known these days as
the steam railway running between Wansford and Peterborough, but there was once
much more to it than that! Both preserved and closed sections of the line are
covered in Christopher Awdry's entrancing book, which features a wealth of
`past and present' photographs, each accompanied by an informative caption.
The Nene Valley Railway was the first line into Peterborough
(1845), forming a long branch from the London & Birmingham Railway at
Blisworth along the river valley via Northampton, Wellingborough,
Irthlingborough, Thrapston and Oundle. The line closed in 1964, and now only
the preserved section at the Peterborough end serves to keep the memory alive.
