On the front cover, an Asa Munger 8-day shelf clock manufactured at the New York State Prison in Auburn. This particular clock was designed by Hotchkiss and Benedict. For the story of the evolution of Munger's "high quality timepieces produced by prison labor," see page 636. On the back cover, the elaborate Black Forest Trumpeter shelf clock by Emilian Wehrle & Co., ca. 1890. On page 648, the clock's 9-horn musical movement, its ornate case, and history are discussed.
