Dear reader!

We are pleased to present you the third volume of ships of World War Two, dedicated to Imperial Japanese Navy. Volume I Kingdom and Commonwealthand volume II States of Americawere published in February.

Below is the standard text on the structure of the presentation of information in the books of the series. It exactly repeats similar texts in the previous volumes.

The reference contains the maximum possible number of side views, reduced in terms of common sense and volume limitation, in two scales: the main one: 1:1000 and 1:500 for units less than 40m long. The format of the publication, proposing also printed edition, is forced to limit us in the information on merchant and fishing vessels with less than 500grt capacity, carrying patrol, minesweeping and other combat duties, and purpose built craft if the total displacement of class was less than 100ts (that were, in the vast majority of cases, experimental boats). Data for these units is provided briefly. Also articles dedicated to small amphibious craft are short.

Ships' data blocks include name of the ship (Builder, laid down, launched, completed or commissioned -the reason and date of deletion from fleet list) Technical data blocks include standard/full load displacement in tons (generally long tons) or displacement surfaced/submerged for submarines, length overall (oa) (if the length between perpendiculars is indicated, pp is witten, if tthe length by waterline - wl) x breadth x mean draught in meters (or maximal draught (max)), composition of machinery (if necessary, number of shafts in brackets), maximal power of main engines in horse powers, maximal speed in knots, maximal fuel stowage in tons, maximal endurance in nautical miles at cruising speed in knots (in brackets), complement, maximal operational depth for submarines in meters. Armour protection is described briefly, detailed description of protection arrangement the reader can find in the text. Armament is described according to the following system: Artillery - number of mounts x number of guns in the mount - caliber of guns in millimeters/barrel length in calibers and mark or common name of the gun. NB: In all cases where we can, we indicate a bore length under British/US system, without length of the breech. If the ship had gunmounts with different gun number, these mounts are marked with +sign. As example, (2 x 4 + 1 x 2) 356/45 BL Mk I means that ship was armed with two quadruple and one twin mount with 356/45 Mk I breech loaded guns. Machine guns with caliber less than 20mm are marked without barrel length and gun mark. Torpedoes - number of mounts x number of tubes in the mount - torpedo caliber for turnable mounts or number of tubes - torpedo caliber for fixed tubes (for example, on submarines, MTBs or old ships). Digits in brackets after number of DCTs and DCRs mean total number of carried depth charges.

Data of aircraft should be read as follows:

Hellcat Mk II: 13.08x10.17x4.11m, 31.0m2, 4155/6400kg, 1 Pratt & Whitney R-2800-10W, 2200hp, 611km/h, 2600(270)km, 15.1m/s, 11500m, 1p; 6 x 12.7 MG or (2 x 20 guns + 4 x 12.7 MG), 6 x 127mm rockets or 908kg bombs (2 x 454kg).

Means: Data of Hellcat Mk II model: wing span 13.08m, length 10.17m, hight 4.11m, wing area 31.0m2, empty mass 4155kg / maximum take-off mass 6400kg, 1 Pratt & Whitney R-2800-10W engine with 2200hp power, maximal speed 611 km/h, flying range 2600km at 270km/h speed, maximal rate of climb 15.1m/s, service ceiling 11500m, 1 seat; armament consisted of 6 12.7mm MGs or 2 20mm guns and 4 12.7mm MGs, 6 127mm rockets or 908 kg bombs.

Hellcat Mk II (fighter-bomber, 854 transferred spring 1944- 1945 (including FR Mk II and PR Mk II), serv. spring 1944-8.1946, USN F6F-5, Pratt & Whitney R-2800-10W (2200hp), strengthened armour, 6 x 12.7 MG or 2 x 20 guns and 4 x 12.7 MG, 6 x 127mm rockets or 908 kg bombs (2 x 454-kg));

Means: modification Hellcat Mk II, purpose fighter-bomber, 865 were served in the RN, received by Navy spring 1944-1945 and served spring 1944 - August 1946, further differences from previous modification are briefly described.
