LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS 1. James Brindley (1716-72), engineer of the early contour canals. Engraving by J. T. Wedgwood showing the Barton aqueduct in the background.
2. Thomas Telford (1757-1834), father of modern civil engineering.
3. Flash locks: illustration from Robertson's Life on the Upper Thames, 1875, showing rimer and paddle type.
4. `Ballasting' on the Upper Thames, from Robertson's Life on the Upper Thames.

7. Inclined lift of bucket-in-well type with fly governor.
8. Vertical lift with caissons confined to upper level and boats freely suspended. Fly governor and lift activated pumps to return caisson water. Both illustrations from Fulton's Treatise on Canal Navigation, 1796.
9. Grand Union Canal: Foxton staircase locks. There are no paddles on the gates, and the paddle by the intermediate gates connects to the side pond, not shown in the picture.

ON THE BACK COVER:
L.T.C. Rolt's love for, and knowledge of, the waterways of Great Britain were unparalleled. Most important, he brought the eye of a trained engineer to bear on the canals and waterworks which were the brainchildren of the first civil engineers.
His book is a fascinating history of Britain's waterways, starting with the first tentative attempts at river development and progressing with a detailed account of the great age of canal-building, and the integral part such men as Brindley and Telford played, as - with the Industrial Revolution - the efficient transport of heavy goods became a necessity. Finally, he charts the decline of the waterways as the railroads took hold, and the re-awakening of interest as the new leisure traffic discovered the old river and canal routes in the twentieth century.
