Introduction
In this book we have attempted to record the story of the Mississippi Central Railroad. In addition, we found that we were writing about times when the State of Mississippi, and a good part of the Southern United States was covered with longleaf yellow pine. These were times when the largest lumber exporting port in the world was Gulfport, Miss., and when a railroad like the 160-mile long Mississippi Central could engage 80% of its activities in moving forest products.
This is not a detailed corporate and legal history of the railroad. It is rather an attempt to show the railroad as its employees and friends knew it, but including factual data to help describe the road's growth, boom and eventual demise. It is, then, a book by and for those who love trains. We hope it will allow those who knew the road, or at least the era, to better remember. We hope it will allow those of a later generation to better understand what the shouting was all about.
