LOUIS RY, better known to many people through the years as the TENNESSEE LINE, LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN ROUTE, and THE DIXIE LINE, operated approximately 1259 miles of trackage from the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, through the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama, to Atlanta, Ga. This same company was organized in the year 1845, although known at that time as the NASHVILLE \u0026amp; CHATTANOOGA RR. During the War of 1861-65, this line was literally destroyed twice by the Confederates, and severely damaged on several other occasions by both Union and Southern troops. Both companies had been closely related prior to the War under the same management, but the N\u0026amp;NW RR had not proven a profitable venture from a financial standpoint and was taken over by the State of Tennessee. However, in 1872 the N\u0026amp;C RR purchased and absorbed the N\u0026amp;NW RR, which was operated for a year as the NASHVILLE, MEMPHIS \u0026amp; ST. LOUIS RY. During 1873 the combined organization was renamed NASHVILLE, CHATTANOOGA \u0026amp; ST. In 1890 the NC\u0026amp;StL Ry gained entrance into Atlanta as lessee of the state-owned WESTERN \u0026amp; ATLANTIC RR. Paducah and Memphis were reached in 1896 when lines of the former PADUCAH, TENNESSEE \u0026amp; ALABAMA RR and the TENNESSEE MIDLAND RY were leased from their L\u0026amp;N RR owner.
