The NASHVILLE, CHATTANOOGA & ST. LOUIS RY, better known to many people through the years as the TENNESSEE LINE, LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN ROUTE, and THE DIXIE LINE, operated approximately 1259 miles of trackage from the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, through the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama, to Atlanta, Ga. This same company was organized in the year 1845, although known at that time as the NASHVILLE & CHATTANOOGA RR. During the War of 1861-65, this line was literally destroyed twice by the Confederates, and severely damaged on several other occasions by both Union and Southern troops. Eventually, the track was put into first class shape during 1864 and operated as the main line of the United States Military RR.
In 1870 the NASHVILLE & NORTHWESTERN RR, running from Nashville to the Mississippi River at Hickman, Ky., was leased by the N&C RR. Both companies had been closely related prior to the War under the same management, but the N&NW RR had not proven a profitable venture from a financial standpoint and was taken over by the State of Tennessee. However, in 1872 the N&C RR purchased and absorbed the N&NW RR, which was operated for a year as the NASHVILLE, MEMPHIS & ST. LOUIS RY. During 1873 the combined organization was renamed NASHVILLE, CHATTANOOGA & ST. LOUIS RY.
During the next 25 years, the NC&StL Ry became known to the public first as the TENNESSEE LINE, and then as the LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN ROUTE. Principal branches served valuable coal, phosphate and timber properties, and among these branches were found two of the narrow or 3-ft gauge. In 1890 the NC&StL Ry gained entrance into Atlanta as lessee of the state-owned WESTERN & ATLANTIC RR. Paducah and Memphis were reached in 1896 when lines of the former PADUCAH, TENNESSEE & ALABAMA RR and the TENNESSEE MIDLAND RY were leased from their L&N RR owner. One branch to Gadsden, Ala., included a 201/2-mile steamboat and car float transfer on the Tennessee River.
In 1880 as a means of eliminating the threat of competition that was developing between the two companies at that time, the Louisville & Nashville RR acquired control of the NC&StL Ry, much to the dismay of the citizens of Nashville. For about 77 years the TENNESSEE LINE or LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN ROUTE which was advertised as THE DIXIE LINE during the Twenties and Thirties, operated as a prosperous subsidiary of the OLD RELIABLE until absorbed in 1957 to eventually become part of the Nashville and W&A Divisions of that L&N RR organization.
However, the NC&StL Ry will always be remembered by the people of Tennessee and Georgia as the original DIXIE LINE - the route of such Chicago-Florida passenger trains as the Dixie Flyer, Dixie Limited, Dixie Express, Dixie Mail, Dixieland, Dixie Flagler, and Dixiana. Several years after the first World War, the emblem of the company was changed to become the famous DIXIE LINE medallion. However, by the time of the second war, an older NC&StL emblem had returned to favor.
