Bulletin #16
This is the story of the Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad (known by its initials as the BRB&L), a famous New England three-foot-gauge line that ran from the industrial city of Lynn, Massaalong the shore through Revere to the company's ferry connection at East Boston. Ferryprovided transportation to a terminal at Foster's Wharf in Boston. A branch known as the Winthrop Loop was added to the BRB&L in 1888.
Originally the "Narrow Gauge", as the BRB&L was unofficially known, was part of a land developscheme put forth by one Alpheus P. Blake. At its opening in 1875, the Narrow Gauge was an excellent example of Yankee frugality carried to the extreme. A single-track line of marginal quality in the beginning, passengers were warned that they rode, "... at their own risk." An almost instant success after opening, the little 8-mile railroad ordered additional new rolling stock after only a few weeks' operation.
