The D&SNG trains have had more than their share of memorable moments. Wrecks in the early days produced spectacular photographs of engines and cars plunged into the roaring river. Snow and avalanches cut Silverton off from the world for weeks at a time. Floods, the worst of which thundered down the canyon in 1911 and in 1970, tore out miles of track leaving behind twisted rails and little else.
Among the most memorable moments on the D&SNG trains are those spun of pure fantasy. The train has starred in movies over a longer period of time than any superstar of mere flesh and blood. The train and its spectacular route have proven irresistible to jaded Hollywood.
Stars who have ridden the train into America's dreams include Clark Gable, David Niven, Jimmy Stewart, Anne Baxter, Marilyn Monroe, Shirley MacLaine, Buster Keaton, Dianne Keaton, Robert Redford and Paul Newman. The movies have included Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Denver & Rio Grande, Around the World h. Eighty Days, Across the Wide Missouri, and Night Passage.
But the train is not the stuff of fantasy. It is real. That reality comes home upon viewing D&SNG's Durango railyards. There on a summer's night, the engines fired for the next days' runs, hiss, sough and sigh in the dark. The aroma of coal smoke drifts across the sleeping cars and depot.
Then it is that the railyards of Durango are like the harbor of a coastal town. They are an entry point, a connection with another world. It is a world of stone stood on end, haunted by Anasazi ghosts, claimed by Utes and Navajos, christened by Spaniards, shaped by a brash young nation and optimisic immigrants. It beckons the adventurous from around the world today and tomorrow for a trip through a wilderness stronghold to Silverton.
