THE RAILFANS AND RAILROAD HISTORIANS of today owe much of their knowledge of the Colorado narrow gauge lines in pre-war years to the work of pioneer railfans. These early fans, working during the 1920's and 30's, preserved visual records of equipment and places that were in the process of vanishing. The remnants of the narrow gauge that were left after World War Two were only a shadow of what had been there twenty years before. Those early railfans who visited Colorado provided most of the photographic record of the last years of the C&S. The willingness of these photographers and fans to share their collections with today's railfans has made this book possible.
LIKE THE PREVIOUS VOLUMES of the Narrow Gauge Pictorial series, this is primarily a picture hook but, because few of today's fans and modelers saw the C&S in operation, and so few of its engines were preserved, some explanatory text has been provided. This was written by George L. Coleman, a fan of the South Park for many years. Hopefully, this text and comments will encourage the reader to study the photographs more closely and with more understanding.
Every attempt has been made to gather pictures of all Colorado & Southern locomotives however, for a number of locomotives no pictures are known to exist showing them in C&S livery. Many of these engines may never have been lettered for the C&S. Rather than include pictures of these engines in pre-C&S roadnames, a broader range of photographs showing other C&S locomotives has been used.
