Colorado's most obscure narrow gauge
Until now, the only history written about the Colorado Eastern was a twelve-page story completed by the late Charles Ryland in 1951. This history appeared in a booklet prepared by the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club for its members. It contained some excellent material, including the superb legal research done by the late George Trout.
During the last thirty years, additional material has been found, facilitating the writing of this history. The wonderful accounts of early Denver written by Jerome Smiley contain an excellent, although brief, history of the early years of the Colorado Eastern. In view of the extremely limited sources of information, much of the detail in this story comes from these two writings, but in no way is it intended to be copied from them. The additional details found in numerous other sources should make the story of this obscure Colorado narrow gauge railroad of interest to railfans and Colorado historians.
