To one who loves railroads and railroading, the story of the development of the Mount Mitchell Railroad is a captivating chapter of the mountain's history. An enormous challenge to reach Eastern America's highest peak by a narrow-gauge railroad was achieved by Dickey & Campbell and Perley & Crockett. The historical significance was an important factor in the composition of this book. This is an historical overview; every effort was made to see that it remains as accurate and true as humanly possible.
My first obstruction in the research of this publication was the fact that there were no remaining survivors who worked on the Mount Mitchell Railroad. My second obstacle was that very few authors have documented this fascinating story. I spent several weeks indexing and retrieving information from the old Asheville Citizen newspaper at the Pack Memorial Library. My research carried me through the entire western portion of North Carolina, in an effort that went on for six years.
Since most of the roadbed is now densely overgrown, my third barrier was to locate an accurate map of the route from Black Mountain to near Mount Mitchell. The difficulty was twofold: First, the roadbed was overgrown and the crossties and trestles were long gone; Second, the railroad did deviate from the Toll Road at Long Gap, which is explained in this book.
In compiling the text and illustration material, new and existing information were both carefully blended in with many never-before published photographs and interviews. I made my best attempt to capture an in-depth study of the construction and operation of this most interesting local railroad and toll road in Western North Carolina; but many bits and pieces are still uncovered because the preservation of knowledge and historical documents was seldom to be found. I hope you will find this story to be as enjoyable as I have.
