A Message for the readers . . .
Issue number 4 . . . this completes our first year of publishing Motive Power Review (MPR). Since the beginning MPR has been plagued with lack of editorial commitment, lack of reader response and lack of an expressed direction. This of course has affected the magazine's content and usefullness. MPR was originally supposed to have been edited and handled by several individuals (which will not be named here). Unfortunately, due to changes in jobs, personal commitments etc. these individuals have not been able to participate essentially since issue number 1. Since that time, thankfully, a few readers have been able to keep the magazine going. As I'm sure readers will note with this issue, MPR has essentially been "tapped out" as far as written information goes. Thus we present a "photo potpurri" collected from some of the readers sent in during the last few months.
Well . . . what is it MPR needs? What can MPR do that other publications "lack"? It seems clear that MPR cannot be a data news magazine as originally envisioned. Its frequency alone nearly prohibits that and lack of good "data-minded" imput from the readers is also part of it. So where should MPR go? MPR's advantages can be a magazine devoted to diesel age enthusiasts. MPR can offer large photos, detailed photos, unusual photos of locomotives. As long as they're good sharp photos MPR can publish many photos from railfans that have never been published elsewhere. In addition to the photos, MPR's primary goal should be to publish good, data-filled, original historical research articles. Whether it be paint schemes, rosters or some technical aspect of the locomotive. MPR can offer its readers a greater diversity of articles for locomotive enthusiasts than other magazines because of their either general-interest or limited viewpoints on the subject. All it takes is you the reader . . . the enthusiast . . . we need your help . . .
And now the good news . . .
Beginning with Issue number 5 . . . Ken Ardinger will be assuming the editor's position. Ken is very knowledgeable on the subject and will be happy to respond to questions from the readers. He also says if any reader needs any help identifying any locomotives, he'll be glad to look over any pictures sent from any part of the country.
