65 pages People paper and profits.  The story of a unique New Jersey Short Line.
This unique little line is indeed a paradox in an era when the public have been led to believe that only size counts, and the way for a railroad to be financially successful is by eliminating competition and through merger with its competitor.
"Paper, People and Profits", accurately characterizes the Morristown & Erie Railroad, which, as railroads go, is a young line, since it was not opened until September 1895. It was originally chartered as the Whippany River Railroad to construct a line from Morristown, on the Lackawanna Railroad, four miles northeast to the growing, and prosperous paper mills at Whippany. A few years later, the company was reorganized as the Morristown & Erie, and extended seven miles easterly to Essex Fells to connect with the Erie Railroad. Service was established to Essex Fells in May 1904.
The story of the genesis, vicissitudes, nd success of this struggling little line, and of the men whose hard work and vision brought success to it, is so interestingly and accurately told, that it brings the railroad to life.
Today, the railroad and its astute and forward-looking officials, are making the most of the opportunities offered by the fast-growing economy and development of the area served by the Morristown & Erie, to insure an even brighter future for it. In 1967 it has the distinction of being the railroad nearest New York City which not only provides excellent freight service for shippers during the work-week, but also, on weekends welcomes passengers to ride on the steam locomotive hauled trains of the Morris County Central Railroad.
