DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
A detailed history of the 12-mile long Great Western branch line from the busy South Devon railway junction of Newton Abbot at the head of the tidal Teign estuary. Initially passing through the lowlying heathlands and clayfields of the Bovey Basin, the line then ascended the steeply graded scenic moorland section to its terminus at Moretonhampstead. This made it very much a branch line from 'shore to moor'.
The Moretonhampstead line sadly closed to passengers on 28th February 1959, an early loss in the general decline of lines in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In spite of this, the southern-most portion of the line, to Heathfield, fortunately remains to this day, albeit with an uncertain future.
John Oweri s association with the branch started when as a young boy he would visit family friends in Bovey and have the opportunity to get glimpses of the railway and later to meet many of the personnel who worked on it.
This book has nearly 200 photographs within its 17 chapters and has several colour photographs from the unique Peter Gray collection. Plans of the line and its stations are incorporated in this fascinating history.
This extensive history from John Owen, follows other well researched and detailed accounts of branch lines in the West Country. His 'Exe Valley Railway' has been a classic in railway publishing.
