introduction
To endeavour to define what it is that gives narrow gauge railways their appeal would be a fool's errand indeed. Just as every line has its own particular attraction, each individual has his, or her, particular penchant towards the narrow gauge.
The historian finds in the surviving railways living examples of much that he studies, with not only locomotives and rolling stock but operating methods and practices continuing from the past century. The addicted railway enthusiast can now have the joy of working on his 'own' railway while the lay public are reminded of what a real railway was like, with steam wafting past the carriage windows and staff able to take a pride in their post. The casual amiability still retained by some companies and societies can do nought but good in our hustle-bustling times.
