PREFACE
The history of Montreal as we know it dates back prior to its founding when it was named Hochelaga by the natives. In 1642 little did its European founders, led by de Maisonneuve, realize that two hundred years later it would develop to become a centre of transportation, all because of its location as an inland seaport. First were the shipping companies then the railways, followed by air transport. Much has changed in more recent times that encourage one to delve further into its transportation history. One mode of transport that merits much research in the Montreal area is railways.
Montreal became the headquarters of the first three railways in Canada with an eleven year spread between the first in 1936 and the third in 1847. By the mid nineteenth century railway fever had spread throughout Canada, indeed throughout North America. Many of these companies were corporate entities on paper, only. Others became hard assets with some blossoming and still many failing. As happens, there are those that through various mergers and economic cycles continue to this day, albeit under different corporate structures.
The first railway on the island of Montreal was incorporated as the Montreal and Lachine Rail-Road in 1846. Over a century and a half later a portion of the line remains extant under the ownership of Canadian National Railway. The history of this early railway is presented herewith. The assembled data are the culmination of my research making me solely responsible for the conclusions contained herein.
The distances and measurements, in this text for the most part, are not expressed in metric but in British measurements. (1 mile = 1.61 kilometres; 1 kilometre = .62 mile). Since the beginning, Canadian railways have adopted this as their standard. The cost of identifying external plant and making change to bridges, signals, etc., plus modifying associated documents to the metric scale would be prohibitive for the railways. Thus, the use of miles continues today.
