Montreals Electric Streetcars by Richard Binns An Illustrated history of the Tramway Era 1892-1959 Dust jacket 1973 151 pages
Montreal's Electric Streetcars by Richard M. Binns, is the story of the varied electric railway rolling stock which was owned and operated by the Montreal transit system. Mr. Binns traces the progressive development of Montreal's electric streetcars from the single-truck Bromic!' "Rocket" of 1892 to the final PCCs of 1944.
Between the lust small electric car on the Montreal Street Railway and the last streamlined tram operated by the Montreal Transportation Commission, there were some 56 classes of passenger cars on the Tramways and their constituents, not to mention almost innumerable types of miscellaneous and snow-fighting units.
Two-car multiple-unit trains, articulated "duplex" cars, heavy suburban units with attached snowplows, and wartime "plywood" trains, all formed part of the equipment parade on the Montreal Street Railway - Montreal Park and Island Railway - Montreal Terminal Railway - and the Montreal Tramways Company-
Each type has been described by Mr- Binns in sonic detail, supplemented by a handsome collection of photographs and illustrations from the best known available collections. Some of the street scenes, which complement the tram views, are a fascinating collection in themselves, depicting the ever-changing panorama of the main streets in the Metropolis.
Mr- Binns, while writing factually about mechanical items of equipment, has succeeded in describing the various classes of trams in a way that makes them seem to come alive again.
Montreal's Electric Streetcars contains 250 photographs, as well as many delightful sketches by Robert Sandusky, Omer Lavallee, Robert Half yard and William McKeown-
In addition, there are route maps and accurate scale diagrams drawn by Anthony Clegg, Omer Tannic and G.A. Parker.
