INDEX    202

MONON: It called itself "The Hoosier Line," and a variety of skilled writers have labeled it "Indiana's own railroad." And so it was. For although Monon trains called in Chicago and Louisville (both via trackage rights), every mile of steel and ties and ballast that the Monon ever owned rested in the Hoosier state.
And yet, to the mind and heart, the Monon Railroad was bigger than all that. Certainly bigger than its route miles (541 in 1971) might suggest. Through the efforts of some biggerthan-life men-founder James Brooks in the 1840's, W. H. McDoel at the turn of the century and the legendary
John W. Barriger III after World War II-the Monon became a larger-thanlife railroad.
Here is a book that chronicles the extraordinary Monon Railroad, a book that records its history from birth in 1847 to its merger into the Louisville & Nashville in 1971. And here is a book that celebrates the Monon, a book that rejoices in rugged old 4-8-0's and magnificent red-and-gray diesel streamliners, in bridges over the Wabash River, and steel rails that wandered down Hoosier city streets.
Gary W. Dolzall and Stephen F. Dolzall, both respected railroad writers, both native Hoosiers who grew up with the Monon, are your guides for this journey. And you'll find that they've properly reserved special emphasis for the Barriger era, that extraordinary time following World War II when the Monon was transformed from a moribund, fragile property into a property worthy of national attention, worthy of our affection. In fact, worthy of a book entitled MONON: THE HOOSIER LINE.
