This brief history of the Mohawk & Hudson Rail Road was prepared in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the operation of its first train, behind the "DeWitt Clinton" locomotive, from Albany to Schenectady on August 9, 1831.
Its author is Fred B. Abele of Albany who is with the NYS Dept. of Transportation, but it springs from his interest in railroad history rather than from any connection with his work. Mr. Abele is former president of the Guilderland Historical Society, member of the Capital District Railroad Club, and of the Mohawk & Hudson Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. His other major interests include trolley cars, steamboats and fire-fighting equipment. He is a Life Member of the McKownville Fire Dept.
