SAC reconnaissance Voodoos would have been capable of delivering nuclear weapons as a secondary mission, however, their primary mission was to take strike photos and successfully return to their base. SAC brass began envisioning their new B-52 Stratofortress as being nearly invincible, and began seeing their projected Voodoo fleet as little more than a nuisance which would drain off vital tanker resources. Following this change of thinking SAC relinquished development of the reconnaissance variant of the Voodoo to Tactical Air Command (TAC) in December of 1955, sixteen months before the RF-101 became operational.
