HOW DIFFERENT are the locomotives we see on railroads today from the ones in use a few years ago! The one pictured on the opposite page, for instance, is entirely covered with a steel casing, or "shroud." Under its steel covering, however, it is not so very different from any other locomotives, except that it is especially designed to pull heavy trains at fast rates of speed.
The chief reason for covering this locomotive was to "streamline" it, reducing its angles so that by offering less resistance to the air about it, its rate of speed will be increased. Another reason for changing the appearance of the engine was to please the public, since everyone enjoys seeing a different looking locomotive.
This engine is named "Commodore Vanderbilt," after a leader in the development of the New York Central Lines. It pulls the "Twentieth Century Limited" between Chicago and New York. This distance of 960 miles is traveled in 161/2 hours-an average speed of almost a mile a minute.
For many years, there have been locomotives that could travel fast. But there were not many radical changes made in the appearance of locomotives until the last few years.
Now, besides the steam locomotive built for speed, we have two other distinct types of locomotives-the streamlined diesel-electric engine, and the powerful electric engine. In the following pages there are pictures and descriptions of all three types-streamlined diesel, steam, and electric.
A classic train book for children includes the latest streamliners Comet, Zephyr and Rebel plus steam locomotives, diesels, signals, freight hauling, passenger traffic.
