INTRODUCTION
LOCOMOTIVE CLASSIFICATION
Electro-Motive Division, General Motors Corp.:
The Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors calls its four-traction motor, hood-type locomotives General Purpose models and uses the letters GP to designate them. EMD calls its six-traction-motor, hood-type locomotives Special Duty models and SD to designate them.
The numbers that follow the letters GP or SD indicate the series of the model and the horsepower. When the model designation ends with the letter "M", this indicates the car body has a full width short hood.
Example: SD70M
SD (six motor, hood type carbody)
70 (4000 hp., series of the model)
M (full width, short hood)
General Electric Company:
The General Electric Co. (GE) present production locomotives all called Dash 8 Locomotives. These models are designated by Dash 8 followed by the numerals which represent the horsepower, followed by the letter B or C to indicate the number of motors per truck. A last letter "W" when used indicates unit has a full width short hood.
Example: Dash 8 40 CW
Dash 8 (series of model)
40 (4000 h.p.)
C (3 axle, 3 motor truck)
W (full width, short hood)
GE called its previous model locomotives Dash 7 Locomotives. These models are designated by the letter B or C to indicate the number of motors per truck (B for 2 or C for 3). This is followed by two (2) numerals which represent horsepower. The last number indicates the series of the model.
Example: B39-7
B (2 axle 2 motor trucks)
39 (3900 hp.)
7 (series of the model)
GE calls its earlier model locomotives the Universal Models and used the letter U to designate them. The horsepower of each model is given by two numbers following the letter U. For example, 25 means 2,500; 30 means 3,000. The number of traction motors per unit is designated by letter B for four motors, C for six motors. This letter follows the numbers that indicate the horsepower.
Example: U33C
U (Universal or hood-type carbody)
33 (3300 hp.)
C (six traction motors)
