on Modern Locomotive Construction recently published in the American Machinist, which, by the request of its editor, I commenced while I was engaged as chief draftsman at the Grant Locomotive Works, Paterson, N. J., and concluded after I had joined the editorial staff of the American Machinist, form the basis of this book.
