INTRODUCTION
As "Phase One" in the Provincial Museum's PROJECT 70, the third floor galleries offer a new approach to the study and enjoyment of British Columbia's modern history. Research for the exhibits included seeking advice from both scholars and persons familiar with almost forgotten techniques. Collecting was often a matter of salvaging and restoring abandoned equipment. Thus printers, telegraphers, blacksmiths, gold miners, loggers, farmers, sailors, and even fur traders have been as prominent as historians in developing these permanent displays.
By beginning their tour in THE METROPOLIS: 1920's-1970's, visitors are exposed to familiar items, including objects, maps, and photomurals symbolizing recent social and industrial trends. Since so much of British Columbia life is dominated today by the use of instant communications and high-speed transport, emphasis has been placed upon telephones, radios, television, aircraft, and computers, - all commonplace now, but breakthroughs in their time.
URBANIZATION & INDUSTRIALIZATION: 1870's-1920's preceded our metropolitan age, and it was then that the basic elements of our present society were formed. Virtually all types of urban commerce, transport, services, and architecture are reflected in a turn-of-the-century street scene containing upwards of 15,000 objects in historical settings. Moreover, all structures are scaled-down replicas of buildings that stood once in the cities of this province. Walk-in exhibits showing pioneer farming, fishing, logging, and mining operations are fitted with historical equipment and machinery restored to the state in which they last were used. And great care has been taken to achieve a sense of realism through sight, sound, touch, and smell.
