Model railroading as a leisure pursuit or recreation has much to recommend it. For the technical or practical mindedthose who like to build thingsits possibilities are unlimited. For the more artistically inclined, the scenic work and surroundings of the model system offer ample scope for their abilities. And for those who merely like railroads for themselves and thrill to the "music of the rails," the operation of a comprehensive layout, duplicating in miniature all the moves made by actual motive power and rolling stock, is the culmination of their rail-minded ambitions.
If, Like most people, the reader finds miniatures of all kinds fascinating, he will discover they are at their best in model railroads. A model railroad system has most of the features that sustain interest: motion, color and illumination, settings or surroundings, and fidelity to its prototype enhance its realism. Therefore, this book is devoted to a serious hobby and is in no way concerned with toys. And it is the author's sincere desire that it will not only be of assistance to the veteran hobbyist, but that it will also serve as an introduction to those who have not yet participated in its pleasures.

The author, in preparing this book, has purposely tried to avoid the more technical data which might confuse the layman. Thus, in the chapter covering track construction, taking for example the description of how a switch is built, mathematical tables and formulas are not included. The description throughout, as far as possible, is given in terms that make the construction easy, since after all the builder is pursuing his hobby for the pleasure involved and not ft its problems and difficulties. However, mechanical accuracy has not on any account, been sacrificed.
It has often been said that a model railroad is complete but never finished, and any enthusiast will agree. For there is always soil change or addition to be made and that is what sustains the interest variety. And so, as the reader discovers the extensive scope of mock railways and the almost unlimited prospects of recreation they offer, he, too, will become as enthusiastic as the thousands of oth railroad modelers, including the author.
