Model Railroading in Small Spaces
by Paul Garrison
When space for model railroading is at a premium, the secret to success is to think of it as a challenge rather than an obstacle. Model railroads blend fine craftsmanship with artistry to provide years of great satisfaction.
A small model railroad will not need massive, complicated benchwork, but you will find loads of ideas on how to get started, plus the facts about electrical circuitry design, landscape, and scenery. The book provides complete instructions for building a four-by-four foot layout. There are even ideas for model railroads that can be folded up and put in a closet.
Contains guidelines for planning layout size, portability, scale, track plans, and costs. Powering model trains is explained, including designing electrical circuitry, wiring diagrams, switch machines, crossovers, and crossings. There's advice on landscaping and scenery, details on how to make simple and inexpensive topographical features like mountains and hills, trees, bushes, fences, and boulders, and even adding a river to the landscape. Another chapter addresses various ways to make objects move. Attention is given to crossing gates, searchlight signals, and warning signs. Turntables, dioramas, and model railroad clubs are discussed. In addition, there are specific instructions on trackwork, modular construction, painting, and building grades.
Although this book concentrates on supplying ideas for small model railroads, any modeler will find loads of ideas to use!
