Canadian 0 Gauge Road With Classification Yard, Freight Yard, and Station.
FOLLOWING Canadian Pacific prototype for the good reason that Guy S. Lytle, the president, works for the CP, the Western RR. has built up an extensive 0 gauge system in Mr. Lytle's basement in Norwood Grove, Manitoba (near Winnipeg). The layout is distinguished by the completeness of its trackage facilities. There are some 624 ft., divided between 274 ft. of main line, 140 ft. of classification yard trackage, 66 ft. of passenger terminal, 50 ft. of engine terminal and shop, 47 ft. of passing siding, and 47 ft. of freight yard.
The main line is in three loops with one passing also made possible by routeing trains onto the outside track of the main passenger terminal. The workmanship in track laying and switches is so accurate that derailments and rough running are not heard of.
Most of the locomotives were built by Roy Johnston of Winnipeg, who holds the title of superintendent of motive power on the Western. A. B. Jacques, assistant superintendent of motive power, built a CPR 0-8-0. The Johnston-built hogs include a 4-6-4 and 4-6-0 of CPR prototype, NYC 4-6-2, free lance 4-4-2, and a Timken 4-8-4. The mechanical development of these engines was described in an article by Mr. Johnston in the January, 1937, MODEL RAILROADER.
In spite of the fact that all the stock of the railroad is owned by the president, it is operated more like a club, and a number of names prominent in local model railroading are represented on the list of officers. Everybody spends plenty of time in maintenance and construction work, thus keeping in first class operating shape a road which otherwise might prove too extensive to be practical.
