Weathering of Equipment.
ISN'T an old, well worn, time weathered box car intriguing? There's an air about it that is in sharp contrast to the brand new fresh paint jobs standing about your 0 gauge Barataria Central yards. And as you of course know, a little contrast improves immensely the effectiveness of your railroad.
Not, we mean to imply, that all cars and locos should look old and forlorn. But we do think that for true realism there should be variety. The most exacting and detailed models don't look right in a yard scene on a layout if they're all brand new and shiny.
Buildings, too, should be treated the same way. Structures built to old designs should look old, except perhaps for frame construction, which can have new paint jobs. It isn't very often that a railroad builds a whole new engine terminal at one time. The red brick and concrete roundhouse may be brand new, but the frame coaling stage may have years of soot and grime soaked
into its exterior. The inbound lead may have been recently relaid, with ties properly spaced and showing, but the other tracks may be nearly hidden under a cloak of oil and cinders.
This train of thought (oh, yes, we even think in trains) was started by W. R. Arnold of Sioux City, Ia., who wrote us in part as follows: "Why is it that scores of layout photos in THE MODEL RAILROADER just do not present real likenesses of the original? Of course there are structural and functional details, such as third rail, which destroy the illusion, but these can be remedied. The main cause of absence of realism is lack of age. I'm sure you've never seen many railroad yards which present an array of freshly painted rolling stock.
