No Easy Road to Model Railroading.
WITH increasing availability of scale and near scale equipment at low prices it is easier than ever to have a model railroad. But we think the worth of model railroading as an adult hobby will continue to depend on what the individual does with his brain and with his hands rather than on what he buys ready to run.
There are two major angles to model railroading, the building and the planning. Which counts the more no one can say. Because the planning is important there is a definite place for buying completed models, and we do not infer that a man cannot have a very satisfying time in our hobby even if he has everything made. But we do think that in cases where all equipment is purchased, the individual must contribute something of his own or he won't realize the benefits in recreation and relaxation that are possible.
A model railroad system is a mighty big project. Few if any model rails can individually complete an entire layout and necessary equipment, even in a lifetime.
But with the aid of the trade an individual can build a layout within a few years, doing the portions of the work he is best able to do and buying the rest. And if the man down the street happens to be all thumbs when it comes to tools, and so lets out all his track-work and even buys his locos and cars all ready to go, but meanwhile is mighty good at the drawing board and works out an exceptionally fine layout, who can say he is not getting as much out of the hobby or that he is not as good a model railroader as you or I, who may be all fired good at building super detail cars but no good at planning the layout?
