This second volume of the MODEL RAILROADER CYCLOPEDIA is a reference manual of diesel locomotives built and used in North America. While the history and development of the diesel locomotive are covered in detail, the primary emphasis is on presenting high-quality reference data for modelbuilding. The 70 individual locomotive drawings are accompanied by photographs showing the engines in various stages of their development from new, to in service, to, in some cases, retirement. We have included many other photos to help in the interpretation of the locomotive drawings and to illustrate how frequently the details of a particular engine were altered.
The drawings are reproduced in a uniform scale in order to make comparisons, combinations, and rescaling a simpler operation. The size chosen is HO scale, not only because this is the most popular now in use, but also because it allows us to include many more drawings than we could with any larger scale. The plans are dimensioned in prototype feet and inches rather than in fractional dimensions for a particular scale.
While these drawings and photographs were primarily selected to aid the model locomotive builder, they were also chosen and arranged to give a continuous accounting of the development of the diesel locomotive and its workings from the early years to the present. We have endeavored to make this the most complete plan book ever published on North American diesel locomotives. This single volume, however, is far from the complete diesel locomotive story.
