ON THE INSIDE COVER
Many model railroaders have a hard time getting started on scenery. New modelers often see this phase of layout building as "artistic," and so they shy away from it, thinking they don't have that kind of talent. On the other hand, assuming they've done a good job to this point, they have an attractive, smooth-running layout that they enjoy. They don't want to risk messing it up by attempting something new, even if they know that, if successful, it could make their layout even better.
This is the problem with entering unfamiliar waters, and the solution is to jump in and get familiar. Simple Scenery will help you do that-without drowning.
No rule says you have to practice your first scenery on the layout itself. Tack some roadbed and track on a 2' x 4' sheet of plywood, a ceiling tile panel, or whatever else you might have, and see what you can do. You'll be pleasantly surprised. This principle of experimentation can be
applied to other worrisome model railroad challenges, such as soldering rail joints, attaching electrical feeder wires, or learning to ballast track.
Experience is the best teacher, no doubt about that, but the experience doesn't always have to be your own.
Lots of expert help is available. In addition to this booklet, Kalmbach Publishing offers a number of books on scenery, including Basic Scenery for Model Railroaders by Lou Sassi, How to Build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery by Dave Frary, Scenery for Your Model Railroad by Mike Danneman, and Building City Scenery for Your Model Railroad by John Pryke. But right now, it's time to start learning the basic concepts and techniques of scenery building.
