Trains are only one element of a realistic model railroad. Buildings play an important role in setting your layout in a specific time and place. They give a model railroad a reason for existence, with factories and other industries that create business for the railroad. Houses and stores provide places for your scale people to live, work, and shop. And, of course, many railroad-related structures, such as depots, interlocking towers, and freight houses, are waiting to be modeled.
A wide variety of plastic and wood kits is available, from simple beginner's kits to complex kits that challenge experienced modelers. Many modelers "scratchbuild" (build from raw materials and parts) their own buildings or use modular components to create unique structures.
This booklet will get you started by looking at the tools and basic techniques you'll need for building and detailing structures.
