Over the course of many years of participation in model railroading-both as a hobbyist and through direct involvement in the hobby industry-I've found that the most often-asked question in model railroading, or just about any other hobby for that matter, is generally prefaced by the words: "Where (or how) can I find out about. . . ?"
This book has been developed to help answer that question. Its goal is to assist model railroaders-regardless of preferred scale, and irrespective of whether they consider themselves to be operators or collectors, or both-in quickly identifying sources of information related to their particular (and sometimes very specialized) interests. In these pages, you'll find sources and resources equipped to expertly address just about any question you might have about this fascinating hobby, and, in turn, lead you to greater enjoyment of a pastime that is diverse, creative, challenging, fulfilling, and rewarding.
A key word in the preceding sentence is "diverse." Model railroading is undoubtedly a very diverse hobby, made up of a variety of popular modeling scales, each of which enjoys its own passionate and dedicated following. If you are already an active model railroader, you're probably aware of this great diversity. You may even feel that you are fairly well informed about sources of information pertaining to your modeling scale. But suppose you want to explore the possibility of diversifying and expanding your interests into another scale. This book will tell you where to seek the information you need in a quick, easy, and straightforward manner.
If, on the other hand, you're brand new to the hobby, or simply interested in exploring its great potential, this book is just the ticket to get you started on the right track (pardon the pun). Browsing through these pages, you'll learn something about the special features that distinguish one scale from another. And, you'll learn something about each scale's respective advantages and limitations. In short, you'll gain the information you need in order to determine what's available and where it's available, and to then make reasonable decisions based on your personal preferences in regard to interests, ability, available time, and financial resources.
Although the presence of real railroads in our day-to-day lives has been somewhat diminished in recent years, there's no arguing the fact that railroading in general, and trains in particular, still hold great fascination and appeal for countless millions of children and adults alike. And, there's no disputing the fact that the fascinating hobby of model railroading continues to grow and attract new followers-many of whom will quickly discover that involvement with toy and model trains can lead to a lifetime of relaxation, personal enrichment, and wonderful friendships. Come aboard, and enjoy the ride!
