Mixed Train Daily is one of the most distinguished and comprehensive volumes ever to be compiled on railroading in the United States. An authentic collector's item, it combines in luxurious book form the work of America's foremost railroad historian and the photographs of Charles M. Clegg, Jr., famous expert in this specialized field, supplemented by color plates from original oil paintings by Howard Fogg, a railroad artist of recognized standing and authority.
As its subtitle indicates, Mixed Train Daily is not concerned with main-line railroading-whose operations have already been recorded in Mr. Beebe's previous books-although there is main-line material here wherever it is an integral factor in the story of the short lines. Its concern is the little railroads of homely destinies, the trains of yesterday which survived the longest.
The simplicities of railroad travel as our fathers and grandfathers knew it in an era of Pintsch lamps, friendly conductors in frock coats with a pink in the lapel, and chime whistles in the country night, are now one with the thorough braced Concord Coach, the Mississippi River packet and the Amoskeag steam fire engine. This is the record, lovingly written and wonderfully photographed.
