Northwestern was first sparked in the early 1960s, while attending graduate school in the Chicago area, when I started to study railroad abandonments. Nationwide information on abandonments had become available only since 1920, when the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) started to regulate them. While going through the ICC records, I found references to one unusually long abandonment in Kansas and Nebraska that had occurred shortly before 1920. I located the line on a map, and I was curious about it, but there the matter remained for some years.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Arial;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eAbout a decade later I wrote the railroad history of Lawrence, Kansas, and the Kansas City Northwestern appeared again. Although it played only a cameo role in Lawrence, my interest was renewed. Nevertheless, after completing the book my time was soon taken up by studies of commuter airlines, and railroad studies were set aside.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Arial;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eIn the late 1980s I wanted to get back to railroads, and the Kansas City Northwestern seemed like an appealing topic. To my surprise, I found that very little had been published on any aspect of the company, presumably because of a lack of easily available information. To piece its history together, I had to rely largely on local Kansas and Nebraska newspapers, an information source that I had also used extensively in the Lawrence study. Since I knew virtually nothing about the Northwestern when I started, I found the work fascinating. As the outline history of the railroad emerged from the printed pages, I felt somewhat like a detective, \"solving\" the history of a little known company from a variety of information sources. Still, because of a dearth of primary sources, I was unable to find answers to some important questions, especially about the motivations of the people who planned, built, and operated the railroad. I have tried to address these questions, but this is done largely through indirect evidence.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Arial;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eIn carrying out this study, I focused on several questions and themes. As an historical geographer, I was especially interested in the logic of locating the railroad; that is, why was this route chosen for building a railroad, what kinds of arguments were used to justify the investment, and what were the strengths and weaknesses of this logic? What were the expectations of on-line communities that made them so generous in subsidizing the Northwestern? What kinds of locational impacts did the railroad have? Once it was completed, what was its operating environment, and why did it fail? What factors brought it into the Missouri Pacific system, and why did that \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Arial;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003ecompany eventually discard it? What were the problems of trying to run a newly independent Kansas City Northwestern during and immediately after World War I, and why did it cease operations? Finally, what attempts were made to bring the railroad back into operation, why did these fail, and what were some consequences of this failure?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Arial;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eFrom a somewhat broader perspective, this is the study of a railroad that should never have been built. Normally, the first railroad to be constructed in an area was economically the strongest, for it occupied the route with the greatest traffic potential. Later railroads then chose from the best of the remaining routes. Although it was not obvious at the time, the Northwestern was constructed near the end of the railroad-building era in its part of the Midwest. It was the last lengthy railroad to be built in its region (if one classifies a Union Pacific line built in 1914 about 25 miles to the west as outside the region), an area that was already served by more railroads than its output could support. It also came into existence in the midst of the greatest railroad construction boom in United States history; to a considerable extent, its construction reflected the tremendous optimism about railroads that was current in the late 1880s.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Arial;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eAlthough the focus is on the factual history and geography of the Kansas City Northwestern, this is not done to the exclusion of the drama and excitement that went with its construction and operation. The railroad was built by people with great hopes, it was enthusiastically anticipated and received by most on-line communities, it had an impact on many aspects of economic and social life in those places, and it experienced its share of accidents and other dramatic events. The cessation of service in 1919 dealt a damaging blow to many small towns, some of which went into a steep decline and have virtually disappeared. Soon after its demise, abandonments began to increase rapidly, becoming a virtual flood during the dark days of the Great Depression and continuing at a high rate (with some fluctuations) to the present. The Northwestern was also a fairly early example of the shedding of a weak segment by a major railroad.
